In a hurry to make his mark on the world, an undersized 4lb 14oz Milo Yekmalian arrived 3 weeks early, on June 5, 2003. The first-born son to Alen & Dianne inherited the role of big brother, when Gavin arrived three years later, shortly after which the family relocated to Caledon, Ontario
There was no way to know that the premature and pint-sized Milo would eventually become known as “TreeMan” and “Slenderman” to his friends, as Milo grew to be one of the tallest kids in school at a dizzying 6’5”. Blessed with his height and athletic gifts, Milo became involved in sports at a young age, beginning with hockey and competing in several Triathlons. Milo was fortunate to discover his true passion in grade 6, when his teacher started Belfountain Public School’s first basketball program; from the moment he tried out for the newly founded team, Milo’s love for basketball had established deep roots.
By grade 7, Milo was selected for the Orangeville Hawks rep basketball team, coached by John MacDonald. As Milo’s passion for basketball continued to grow, his aspirations for a future in the game compelled him to join the Mississauga Monarchs, after two years with Orangeville.
Milo graduated from Robert F Hall Catholic Secondary School in 2021. As a member of the basketball, volleyball and track & field teams, Milo thrived by surrounding himself with friends, teammates and mentors that would drive him to reach his potential.
Never satisfied and always striving to elevate his game, Milo joined the Halton basketball club; played for Canada Elite in 2021; and competed at Burloak Prep in Burlington for the 2021/22 season. With his sights focused on university basketball, Milo returned to high school for a 5th year to improve his grades, attending M.M Robinson in Burlington.
Although he was only at M.M. Robinson for a very short time, he left a lasting impression. An anecdote shared by Milo‘s principal at his new high school demonstrated the impact Milo had on people in his orbit. His principal fondly shared that during Milo’s first week of school, which coincidentally was also his first week as principal, Milo approached him in the hallway and introduced himself explaining that they were both new to the school. This subtle gesture of establishing common ground with someone… anyone… was Milo’s artful way of creating comfort through a shared bond despite the anxiety of being at a new school.
That story captures a lot of what made Milo special. He wanted people to be happy. He had a knack for making people comfortable.
Milo’s coaches all recounted similar stories about a young man with a great disposition to match his equally great work ethic. Milo always gave 110% every time he hit the court whether it was at practice or in a game. His drive, determination, and passion to play were evident in his basketball journey from the beginning.
In addition to his dedication on the court, Milo’s kindness and compassion drove him to stake a major role in organizing the Hoops for Hunger program; raising donations and delivering assistance for those less fortunate than him, during the holidays.
Milo often expressed that he wanted to make his parents proud.
Proud is an understatement. We were truly blessed to have raised a son with so much grace, passion, love, and an extremely big heart.
Sadly, Milo’s life was cut short on May 17, 2022, just weeks before his 19th birthday.
Milos life was taken by Tomislav Roki 67 of Toronto, Roki was charged with careless driving causing death the maximum charge under the high way traffic act. However, according to court proceedings, officers never signed a key document swearing to the charges against Roki; Ontario Court justice of the peace Neil Burgess ruled the case a nullity and the case was dismissed.
We were all deprived of the opportunity to see this young man fulfill his tremendous potential; a life cut short by a careless driver only a kilometer from his family home in Caledon.
In the wake of Milo’s tragic passing, the friends and family he left behind rallied their efforts and dedicated their time to launch a charity in tribute to Milo: the Milo Foundation Charity.
In recognition of the remarkable Milo Yekmalian, and to honour the passions that fuelled him, his family would like Milo’s legacy to live on forever through the Milo Foundation Charity, by continuing to help families in need and assisting student athletes.
Monetary contributions will fund food, clothing, personal care items and scholarship designed to help student athletes requiring assistance and families in need
The spirit of Milo’s work ethic, kindness, selflessness, and desire to help others will live through this charity – a fitting tribute to a young man who left the world a better place.
